This is an example of a "NewsWatch" -- a summary of the top six national and international news stories that runs on an hourly basis. As a newscaster at The Canadian Press, I was responsible for writing as many as five of these per day on strict hourly deadlines.

Cannabis legalization

As Canada entered a new era of legalized recreational cannabis, I was working as a solo overnight news editor at The Canadian Press in Toronto. One of the first stores to open was in my hometown of Sydney, N.S. I had seen social media traffic that a well-known local musician was among those lined up to make the first purchase.
